Is Your Gum Line Receding? 5 Signs You Shouldn't Ignore

misc image

Worried your gums might be receding? This is a serious problem that needs attention, so check out these signs — and see your dentist!

Gum recession might not sound like such a bad thing, but when the gum tissue surrounding your teeth gradually pulls away, it shows more of your tooth and even exposes the root. Not only can this increase your tooth sensitivity, but it also raises your risk of tooth decay and tooth loss.

The good news is that the condition is treatable. Dr. Chandan Walia and the Implants & Periodontal Arts team treat gum recession. How do you know if you have it? Here are five signs you shouldn’t ignore.

1. Your teeth look longer

One of the first things you notice is that your teeth appear longer than they used to, which happens because your gums are pulling away from your teeth, exposing more of their surface area. While this occurs gradually, you eventually notice it when you look in the mirror. Your gums may even recede enough to expose the tooth root.

2. Your teeth are more sensitive

If your tooth roots are exposed, it can lead to your teeth being much more sensitive when you’re eating or drinking something hot, cold, sweet, or acidic. The root is not protected by enamel like the rest of your tooth is, so it reacts more to temperature and substances.

3. Your gums are swollen or bleeding

Healthy gums are pink and firm. If your gums are swollen or bleed when you brush or floss, this may indicate gum disease, which is a leading cause of gum recession. Let your dentist know, especially if this continues over time.

4. Your gumline is changing

You may start to notice changes in your gumline, which may include notches or grooves above your teeth as your roots begin to be exposed. You may also notice areas where your gumline is thinning, uneven, and pulling back from your teeth as it shifts higher than it used to be.

5. Your teeth are loose

Advanced gum recession can begin to weaken the bone that supports your teeth. If you begin to notice loose or wiggly teeth or your bite feels different and your teeth don’t fit together the way they used to, these signs may indicate significant gum recession.

Gum recession doesn’t get better on its own, but we offer effective treatments, including gum grafting, deep cleaning, and gum disease therapy. The best way to prevent gum recession is to practice excellent oral hygiene and receive regular oral exams.
