When to Visit Your Periodontist for Gum Recession

Worried about your gums receding? Here are a few tips on when you should have your gums evaluated — and what you can do about the problem.

A periodontist is a dentist who specializes in the health of your gums and jawbone, including diagnosing and treating gum disease and installing implants to replace missing teeth.

A general dentist focuses on preventive and restorative treatments for your teeth (cleaning, filling cavities, etc.). A periodontist treats the tissues that support your teeth (gum and jawbone), which can fall outside the scope of their normal work.

If you think you might be experiencing gum recession, Dr. Chandan Walia and our expert team at Implants & Periodontal Arts can help. Here’s more information about when to visit your periodontist for gum recession.

What is gum recession?

Gum recession occurs as your gums begin to pull away from your teeth, exposing the roots underneath and making your teeth more vulnerable to cavities. This issue can affect anyone, at any  age.

You’re more likely to develop gum recession if you have periodontal disease that’s damaging your gums, have braces or other orthodontic treatment that can put pressure on your gums, use chewing tobacco, or tend to brush your teeth aggressively.

What are the signs you need treatment?

Recognizing the signs of gum recession early can help you avoid damage and the need for more extensive treatment. A few indicators that you should visit Dr. Walia for your gum recession:

Changes in length

If you notice a change in your smile or that more of your tooth is showing, this could mean your gums are receding.

Sensitivity to hot and cold

Exposure of your tooth root can cause sharp pain and more sensitivity to hot, cold, and acidic foods.

Loose or shifting teeth

This situation could indicate that gum recession has weakened the foundation of your teeth, causing them to move.

Bleeding and swollen gums

These symptoms may be part of gum disease, but they can also be a sign of recession.

What can your periodontist do about gum recession?

Unfortunately, your gums cannot grow back once they have receded, but we do have an effective treatment: gum grafting. With this method, Dr. Walia replaces a portion of your missing gums with tissue from another area - usually the roof of your mouth or the gum tissue around the damaged spot. Numbing medication keeps you comfortable, and gums heal quickly afterward.

If your dentist has referred you to a periodontist, our Implants & Periodontal Arts team will be happy to evaluate you. To schedule an appointment, contact our Chandler, Arizona office or book your appointment online.
